Will a pressure washer remove deck stain?
Before you start, you need to be sure that pressure washing your deck is the right course of action.
You might be needing to do a maintenance clean to protect your deck from damaging dirts and moulds. Or you could be preparing it for a recoat.
In either case, your pressure washer shouldn’t remove the deck stain. You won’t need an extreme pressure to clean your deck properly.
As long as you use a brightener or cleaner, most of the dirt will be lifted and loosened from your deck. You can use a lower pressure to spray the cleaning product and dirt straight off your deck without any risk of removing the deck stain.
What if you do want to remove deck stain with a pressure washer?
In that case, it is possible but it’s not so straight forward.
Even if your coating is peeling and flaking, you’ll most likely need a stripping agent to help the process along.
There’s so many products available, but it’s very hard to recommend one. When I need to strip a deck, I actually sand it back instead of pressure cleaning it.
Sanding is always guaranteed to work and it won’t damage gardens and the side of your home.
But, you want to strip with a pressure washer so I’ll help you with that.
You can choose a product like ……..
And apply it to your deck with a bucket and deck brush
Allow it to sit on the surface for the recommended time, usually 20 minutes but don’t let it dry on the surface.
You can keep it wet by spraying it down with a light mist
After 20 minutes, take a scrapper and check the coating is coming off. Now you can use your pressure washer to remove the stain or whatever coating you have on your deck.
You’ll probably need to give your deck a light sand after you clean it, then you should be ready to seal it.
Before you get to the point of pressure washing there’s still a question that needs to be answered...
